SANYOSHA has developed an environmentally friendly, transparent, flame-retardant polycarbonate (hereinafter referred to as "PC") that is both environmentally friendly and high-performance.


PC, which is an engineering plastic, is a transparent, impact-resistant, and high-temperature-resistant material, and is mainly used in the manufacture of automobiles, soundproof walls, internal and external parts of home appliances, and medical equipment parts.

Sanyosha (represented by Kang Ho-sung) is a subsidiary of the Sanyo Group, which focuses on business in the chemical and food fields. Sanyosha said on July 20 that its self-developed flame-retardant transparent PC without flame retardant will soon enter the mass production stage. Sanyosha's Jeonju EP plant and Sanyo KASEI Jeonju plant will be responsible for the production of this environmentally friendly transparent flame-retardant PC.


Flame retardant PCs are a "must" for products that generate their own heat or are less resistant to fire. Since secondary fires caused by flammable materials or toxic gases emitted during combustion may cause greater harm, we can use flame-retardant materials in building materials, helmets, home appliances, and automobile interior and exterior parts to ensure the safety of people's lives.


Producing transparent, flame-retardant PCs usually involves adding flame retardants to the material, which can diminish the advantages of PCs - transparency and impact strength. Environmental pollution from flame retardants is also a major concern. Flame retardants contain halogens such as chlorine and bromine, which produce toxic gases when burned. The use of non-halogenated flame retardants has been an alternative in the past, and recently there has been a lot of controversy about the dangers of such flame retardants.

The transparent flame-retardant PC developed by Sanyosha is based on Si-PC, a silicone-based polycarbonate material that Sanyosha localized in 2012, and is a flame retardant-free product developed by changing the polymerization structure of the original material. As a result, its impact strength and chemical resistance at low temperatures are superior to those of ordinary PC.


The environmentally friendly transparent flame retardant PC developed by SANYOSHA has achieved the highest rating of V-0 in the vertical flame test of UL94, a flame retardancy test developed by Underwriters Laboratories, which develops safety specifications and provides appraisal services, and is only rated as V-0 for plastics that extinguish the flame of a vertical combustion within 10 seconds. Only plastics that extinguish themselves within 10 seconds of a vertical flame can be rated as V-0.

Compared with transparent and flame-retardant PCs on the market today, Sanyosha's PCs have enhanced impact resistance, chemical resistance, and transparency in low-temperature environments. Sanyosha will focus on automobiles, electronics and electrical appliances, outdoor lighting, outdoor displays, electric vehicle charging stations, aircraft casing materials, building interior and exterior materials, and medical devices with the above advantages of its products in order to meet the needs of the relevant markets for low-temperature and flame-retardant materials. We will focus on the automotive, electronics, outdoor lighting, outdoor display, electric vehicle charging stations, airplane shell materials, building interior and exterior materials, and medical equipment markets based on the above advantages to meet the demand for low-temperature impact resistant materials in these markets.


In addition, Sanyosha can process the material into thin sheets, profiles, and other film shapes of about 1 mm, and the mechanical properties of this material are no less than those of ordinary PCs, so it will be used in a wide range of industrial fields that require transparent and flame-retardant materials, in addition to functional packaging materials.


In addition, in order to expand the market for environmentally friendly transparent and flame-retardant PCs, Sanyosha intends to supply raw material resins (plastics made from a single material) to other chemical companies. In turn, chemical companies will be able to utilize the raw material resins to produce and sell modified products (products that improve the properties of raw material resins by mixing them with additives to improve the properties of the final products in the fields of construction, automobiles, and aerospace, etc.) as needed.
